It's abundantly clear there is a growing trend for enterprises and service providers to move to IT-as-a-service models. To do this, they need to be very agile in not only delivering capacity, but also performance to service-level agreements (SLAs) — and deliver them predictably on a sustained basis. This ultimate goal has put lots of visibility on the quality of end-user experience at all times. Providing consistent and predictable performance in shared-storage infrastructures with many diverse workloads is vital to delivering this experience. Along with traditional performance management best practices NetApp® ONTAP® 9 brings: • Advanced headroom analytics to shine the light on available performance capacity in the system to operate optimally • Visibility into critical hot consumers of performance (files and clients) • Additional performance enhancement to enable fault isolation in mixed aggregate deployments No longer will the storage admin provision the new workload based solely on available capacity that invariably leads to overloaded systems delivering poor performance for users. Headroom will inform the decision to place new workloads where sufficient performance capacity exists to start with. Workload re-balancing is improved by knowing the top consumers of resources. Additional enhancements strengthen the ability of ONTAP to handle latency-sensitive SLAs.
